Thorne and Moorends are set to mark the start of the festive season with their annual Christmas Light Switch On event this week.
The event, organised by Thorne Moorends Town Council, starts at 4.30pm on Friday 30 November with the lights switched on by Town Mayor Susan Durant at 6.00pm.
Christmas carols will be sung by local school children and TMCR radio will be on hand playing festive hits. Santa is set to make an early appearance with his sleigh alongside Thorne Rural Lions.
Christmas characters will be mingling with the crowds and street entertainers will be out showcasing their magic tricks, juggling and fire eating skills. Local charity Trust 22 will be decorating Gingerbread figures while Santa’s Grotto hands out free gifts to children. Fairground rides add to the festive fun.
Local retailers will be offering late night shopping and craft stalls will be selling gifts for Christmas. Town Centre cafes will be open for a bite to eat.
The event take place on Friday (30 Nov) from 4.30pm to 7.00pm.
The Green, Horse Fair Green and Finkle Street will be closed to vehicular traffic between 3.30pm and 8.00pm in support of the event.
**From 2pm on Friday (30 Nov) and 10am – 3pm on Saturday and Sunday (1 & 2 Dec), the Old People’s Welfare Centre on Church Street in Thorne will be open for a ‘Dickensian Christmas’ with indoor and outdoor stalls, tombola, face art and glitter tattoos. Singer Lottie Simone takes to the stage to provide live entertainment from 6pm on Friday.
