Thorne & Moorends Colliery Monument Committee are to hold a coffee morning open day tomorrow.
The event takes place at the Old People’s Welfare Centre on Church Street in Thorne, Saturday 10 February from 9.30am. The open day will feature a display of mining artefacts and other memorabilia, and visitors will also have the chance to buy a maquette of the committee’s proposed memorial monument or a brick for the existing miners’ memory wall.
The group were recently granted planning permission for a memorial monument which will be situated next to the miners’ memory wall, outside of the Hedgerow Centre on Marshland Road in Moorends.
The project is funded in part by the sale of bricks for the memory wall. Monument Committee Secretary, Edith Wake, said: “To date we have over 520 bricks sold, a fantastic effort by the community who have taken this project to its heart.”
The service for the next unveiling of the memory wall will take place at 12noon, Saturday 24 March. The bricks for this phase will be available to purchase until Friday 2 March. Call 01405 483477 for more information.
