The annual switch on of the Christmas lights in Thorne & Moorends takes place at the beginning of December and organisation of the event is underway.
A number of attractions are already in place with further plans being drawn up by Thorne Moorends Town Council and the organising committee as the clock counts down to the big event.
Shops are being invited to open late and the committee is calling for anyone interested in holding a stall at the event to get in touch. Cafe’s are being encouraged to serve up festive fayre whilst a hog roast and mulled wine will also be on offer. A prize will be up for grabs in the Best Dressed Shop Window competition.
There is an open invitation for street performers and buskers to attend and help entertain the crowds.
The festivities in the town centre on Friday 1 December take place between 4.00pm – 8.00pm, with the lights being officially switched on in Thorne Market Place by Town Mayor, Susan Durant, at around 6pm.
The event will feature entertainment from local choirs, whilst festive characters including Rudolph and a snowman will be mingling with the crowds. Thorne Rural Lions will also be present with Santa and his Sleigh.
There will be fairground rides and children’s activities, and youngsters will be able to visit Santa’s Grotto. Doncaster Council are funding a ‘rodeo reindeer’ to add to the merriment.
Local groups are also being encouraged to apply for a cash grant from the Mayor’s Fund, with cheques being presented at the event.
Thorne Moorends Town Mayor, Susan Durant, said: “This year we are extending the length of the Christmas Light Switch On to make it a really festive community event. We hope to see the local community enjoy the festivities whilst supporting local business.
“The Mayor’s fund is available for local groups to apply for, and I would love to hear from those groups that a small amount will make a big difference to, especially those that haven’t applied before. We have a fantastic community & voluntary sector that work hard all year round and it would be great to support some of those groups”.
Anyone wishing to apply to the Mayor’s Fund should contact the town council on 01405 818015 or email: email@example.com
Traders or organisations wanting to book a stall should contact Karren on 07808 802223 or email: firstname.lastname@example.org
Also taking place over the weekend of Friday 1 – Sunday 3 December is the Best of Thorne’s ‘Yuletide Christmas Cracker’ event in and around the Old People’s Welfare Centre and the town centre – see your Thorne Times for full details (out Monday 20 November).
