Thorne Moorends Colliery Monument Committee are to hold another unveiling service at the Miners’ memory wall.
The special Remembrance service is to be held at the wall, on Marshland Road in Moorends, at 12noon on Saturday 24 November.
Dedications will be read by mining historian and author, Edward Downes, who will also read a selection of poems by miners’ poet, Mick Westwood. Former miners Shem Williams and Norman Walsh will perform the unveiling. A poem written by local resident Susan Poskitt will also be read by youngster Izzy Walton and committee member Linda Grainger will sing ‘Amazing Grace’ before a minutes silence.
Committee Secretary Edith Wake said: “We want to invite everyone to join us for this poignant service of remembrance as we commemorate the lives of miners who fuelled our country throughout the world wars.
“As before we shall be inviting people to lay floral tributes”.
Refreshments at the Moorends Hotel will follow the service.
**The monument committee recently held a fundraising evening at Thorne Democratic Club. The ‘Stars in our Eyes’ charity roadshow night was funded by the Democratic Club and Thorne Moorends Regeneration Partnership. Edith said the event “raised a fantastic £1396.32 for the monument fund.”
