A Christmas tree in Thorne town centre has been found damaged with the top half of the tree ‘sawn-off’.
The damage to the tree in Thorne Market Place was discovered on New Year’s Day by a Thorne Moorends town council employee.
Damage had also been caused to the picket fencing surrounding the tree and Christmas lights powered from a column in the centre of the market place were ‘hanging down’. The situation was later made safe by a member of the town council grounds staff.
The council says it believes the damage was done sometime over New Year’s Eve. The top half of the tree has not been found.
The Christmas tree had been sponsored by local Co-operative branches who had donated £250 from their community fund.
