Thorne Moorends Town Council has announced the award of thousands of pounds of government funding to help make improvements to a local recreational area.
£25,000 has been awarded to the town council from the Government’s Pocket Parks Plus fund which will be spent on improvements to the Delves recreational site.
The town council say the money will specifically pay for a new woodland play trail in the woods alongside White Lane, new seating and bins, new picnic areas and new site signage.
A spokesperson for Thorne Moorends Town Council said they are ‘particularly pleased’ with the grant as the bid for the funding was put together at short notice after only identifying the fund shortly before the closing date for applications.
Town Mayor Cllr Susan Durant, who initiated the bid, said: ”The grant is a helpful boost for the Delves site and continues the council’s efforts to seek improvements and investment in all of the council’s public sites and assets”. Cllr Durant added: “Whilst the Delves is the current focus, the council is considering early plans for investment and improvements at a number of other public sites.”
Thorne Moorends Town Council has previously said it is keen to develop the Delves as a ‘Green Hub’ – used to promote green sites across Thorne and Moorends – and is currently working on a scheme that they hope will see a number of improvements including a new toilet block and refurbishment of the café building.
The town council recently sought expressions of interest from potential tenants for the Delves café and say they have been “inundated” by interested parties. The council spokesperson continued: “The process of selecting the new tenant will begin very shortly and, subject to completing the refurbishment of the building, the council hopes to see the café back up and running with a new tenant as quickly as possible.” They added: “It is, however, likely to be some months before refurbishment works are complete.”
A further £45,000 in funding has already been confirmed for the site, allocated from section 106 monies through Doncaster Council.
