FOOTBALL: Club Thorne Colliery have formed their first girls team and the u9s will make their debut in the Doncaster Junior League on September 9.
A club spokesman said: “The girls are from local schools and will be representing Club Thorne and our local community in a positive way.
“They are working hard to learn new skills, which they are bringing into their games. They are forming strong team and friendship bonds and are consistently improving.”
The team, coached and managed by Tony Hurrel, have already played a number of games against other teams within the Doncaster borough, as well as some further afield, including tournaments in Goole and Crowle.
“As well as improving their fitness and communication skills, the girls are building confidence, resilience, determination and show incredible sportsmanship,” added the spokesman.
“We are very proud of these girls and hope they can inspire other girls into football.”
The girls train at Moorends Recreation Ground on Mondays, 5.30-6.30pm and are keen to welcome girls aged between six and 10 to join the training sessions.
Thanks were expressed to sponsors Thorne Snooker Centre, Togs and Zap Garage Doors. More sponsorship opportunities are available for any local businesses wishing to support the team.
